Avignon
Who didn't hear about the famous Bridge in Avignon?
This bridge (correctly the leavings of the bridge) was build about 1100 year. It had 22 spans and was 900 meters long. Now, we can see only 4 spans which are about 200 meters long.
And that's all :)
I think most of you. Also, many people know that in this city there was a residence of the antipope.
But did you see this beautiful city? I want to show you something interesting...
Ok, we will start our tour telling something about history. In Roman times in the place of city, there was a village called Avenio. In the middle ages Avignon was dependent on France because it lied in Provence.
From 1309 popes stayed in Avignon but in years 1378-1408 the city was the residence of antipopes. This time is called "Ävignon Papacy".
But.. If you are interested in history of Church, you can read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_church
Now, something more interesting...
Maybe some photos?
Here ↑ you can see the most popular (excluding the Bridge) historic monuments in Avignon: the cathedral Notre Dame des Doms and Palais des Papes ("Papal Palace").
And now, the most famous bridge in that part of France:
| Pont d'Avignon (also named Pont Saint-Bénezet) |
| This two photos ↑ I did when I was on the bridge. |
And that's all :)
I hope You enjoyed it :)
I'm sorry if there were some writing mistakes :)
A+
Anne
