The Louvre

Hi guys!
What a beautiful day! Isn't it? It's warm and sun is shining.I recalled one day last summer... It was very hot and sun was shining too. We (people from my group) were staying in a veeeeery long queue. We were waiting at the entrance to the Louvre... The queue had about a kilometer. We spent about two hours at waiting.
Today, I will write something about this beautiful Museum in Paris which is called Louvre.

In past, it was a royal palace. Now it's an art museum.
Louvre is one of the biggest museums in the world and it is the most visited museum that kind. Louvre is one of the most important landmarks in the capital of France.
There you can see some photos from the outside of the building:
This photo has very unusual shape because this is a panoramic photo

composed of three photographs ;)

On this photo on the left there is Pyramid of the Louvre - the construction of steel and glass, situated in the courtyard of the Louvre. Inside it, there is main entrance to the building.

History of the Louvre Museum:
  • In 1190 King Philip II ordered to build the first castle. It had to be a fortress of defense against Viking incursions.
  • In 1546 King Francis I rebuilt the castle into the palace.
  • In 1566 King Charles IX built the first storey of Little Gallery (Petite Galerie).
  • In 1595 King Henry IV began construction of a Large Gallery (Grande Galerie).
  • In 1672 King Louis XIV moved the royal seat from the Louvre to the Versailles.
  • In 1791 National Assembly of the French Revolution decided to transform the Louvre in museum.
  • In 1803 museum changed its name to Musée Napoléon.
  • In May 1871 in last days of Paris Commune revolutionaires wanted to destroy the Luovre. The collection was miraculously rescued by Florian Trawiński.
  • In 1983 the president François Mitterrand presented a draft of restoration of the palace and the creation of the underground complex below the main courtyard.
  • On 15th of September 1988 there was an official opening of new entry in the main courtyard.
  • In 1993 the second phase of the project was finished  (underground commercial passage in which root node there is a reverse pyramid).
Ok, that's all. Don't panic! I won't write more about the history and dates :) .

Etymology (origin) of the name:
There are several hypotheses. In my opinion the most probable is that the name comes from the French word L'ouvre meaning masterpiece.
Another hypothese says that the name is connected with teh location of the museum.  The castle (probably) is located in the place of old oak forest (oak - fr. rouvre).

Exhibits of The Louvre

There are about 380.000 exhibits in the museum. But don;t panic! I won't write about all of them ;). I will say you something about the most popular paintings and sculptures:

  • The most popular paniting in the world - Mona Lisa (La Gioconda) by Leonardo Da Vinci

Leonardo Da Vinci -  Mona Lisa (La Gioconda)
We had to squeeze through the crowd before we saw that painting. Some of people think that it’s a very big portrait. To say true, it isn’t very big… It’s size is 77cm x 53cm.

  • Venus de Milo (Aphrodite of Milos)

Unkown Author - Venus de Milo
We don’t know who is the author of this statue. Some people say that it might be a work of Agesander of Rhodes.

  • Winged Victory of Samothrace (also called Nike of Samothrace)

Unkown Author - Nike of Samothrace
That statue is 3,28 meter high! It is located in the main hallway of  the Louvre.

  • The Intervention of the Sabine Women
Jacques-Louis David - The Intervention of the Sabine Women
That painting is very big! It’s size is 3.85 x 5.22 m!

  • The Coronation Of Napoleon
Jacques-Louis David - The Coronation Of Napoleon
It's also a very big work of art.

  • Another photos from the Louvre:

Ok, that's all! I hope it was interesting for you ;)

I'm soo sorry you had to wait for a loong time but - you know - there is a lot of other things to do and I have to improve my photos what took me a lot of time.
I promise you won't wait much time for my next post ;)
A plus! (it means bye bye in French)
